They Ask

They ask me how I believe in God
When there is so much going wrong
They ask how I can stand by the people
Who scream at me and tell me I shouldn’t exist
I pause and I think
I remember the feeling of a tiny hand leading me around
A little girl the most excited to see me anyone has ever been
I think that maybe God put this here for me
Maybe he put the good out there too
I think about my best friend
The one who is teaching me to love myself
Surely if God did all the wrongs God did this as well
I have seen the bad God is claimed to do
I have seen the bad people claim to do is God’s name
And I have seen the sun shining through the leaves of a tree
I dont think God put all this bad out here
But if God did then he also must have put all the lovely things out there as well
They ask me how I believe in God
I ask them how could I not

Context/Notes About This Poem: Anakin has been asked why he choses to believe in God. Many people assert he can not be religious and queer or disabled, many people also ask him how could he believe in God when there are so many bad things in the world but Anakin does not believe that his queerness and disability are somehow inherently anti-religion. He also does not believe that God controls everything (or even most things) that happen but if things God did control everything or make everything happen than the good far out weights the bad in Anakin's mind and makes it all worth it.
